Earlier on Sunday, the elder Arellano's son, also named Jerry Arellano, was arrested in Longmont. He faces charges of second-degree assault - strangulation, third-degree assault, and child abuse following an argument at a woman's residence that turned physical. The father intervened in the fight, striking one individual and then firing his weapon.
The altercation led to a significant police response, including the deployment of a SWAT team. A shelter-in-place alert was issued for residents in the affected area for several hours. Both father and son are being held in jail with substantial bail amounts set.
