- Government launches new 'zero-tolerance' plan to tackle £1bn waste crime.

Four individuals have received prison sentences for their involvement in a year-long conspiracy to illegally dump controlled waste at six separate locations throughout London.
The operation, uncovered by the Environment Agency, saw criminals repeatedly disposing of materials including tyres and waste from house clearances and construction. Evidence gathered included CCTV footage showing the men tampering with surveillance equipment and obscuring vehicle registration plates to evade detection.
Sentences ranged from 18 months to 28 months imprisonment. Two individuals received suspended sentences of 14 months, each to be served over two years. This case highlights the growing sophistication of waste crime gangs in the UK, which officials estimate manages around a fifth of all rubbish illegally.
