100 New Officers Guard London's Jewish Communities
6 May
Summary
- 100 additional officers deployed to protect London's Jewish communities.
- New team formed after recent arson attacks and stabbing treated as terrorism.
- Government provides £25m funding for protective policing in London.

The Metropolitan Police has announced the deployment of an additional 100 officers to form a dedicated Community Protection Team focused on protecting London's Jewish communities. This new unit will draw officers from various specialized divisions, including neighbourhood policing and counter-terrorism capabilities.
The decision comes in response to a recent escalation of antisemitic incidents, including arson attacks on Jewish sites and a double stabbing in Golders Green, which is being treated as an act of terrorism. In the past four weeks, approximately 50 individuals have been arrested for antisemitic hate crimes, with eight subsequently charged.
This strategic enhancement of police presence is supported by a £25 million government funding package for protective policing, with £18 million earmarked for the Metropolitan Police. The funds have already facilitated an increase of 1,000 officer shifts per week.
Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley emphasized that this team is a crucial step in strengthening the response to ongoing threats. He also highlighted the potential for this model to support other communities in London facing elevated risks in the future, stressing the need for sustained, long-term investment.
