Lil Nas X Avoids Felony Charges With Diversion Program
6 Apr
Summary
- Lil Nas X entered a mental health diversion program for battery charges.
- His charges will be dismissed if he complies with treatment for two years.
- The artist had voluntarily sought inpatient mental health treatment.

Grammy-winning artist Lil Nas X, whose real name is Montero Hill, has been granted entry into a mental health diversion program. This decision was made during a courtroom appearance on Monday, April 6, 2026. The judge determined that the felony charges stemming from his August 2025 arrest, which alleged battery against three police officers, were aberrant from his normal conduct.
The court linked the incident to the artist's subsequent diagnosis of bipolar disorder. As a condition of the diversion program, Hill must adhere to his treatment plan and obey all laws for the next two years. Successful completion will lead to the dismissal of the case. The judge emphasized that treatment benefits both the individual and society.
Following his arrest, Hill voluntarily admitted himself to The Meadows treatment hospital in Arizona, where he received nearly two months of inpatient care. His defense attorney reported that this treatment was successful, and he has since transitioned to a rigorous mental health regimen, including therapy and psychiatric appointments.
Hill was arrested after being observed in traffic in Studio City, California, wearing only underwear and boots. Prosecutors alleged he assaulted officers who attempted to take him into custody. He had pleaded not guilty to charges including battery on a police officer and resisting an executive officer.
Previously, Hill expressed gratitude for the opportunity to focus on his well-being and thanked his fans for their support. His father also shared that Hill had been dealing with personal pressures as an artist and a provider.
