Dowry Death: Mother-Son Get Life Sentence
5 Feb
Summary
- A man and his mother were sentenced to life imprisonment.
- They were convicted in a dowry death case from 2016.
- The court also imposed a fine of Rs 3 lakh on each.

In a significant ruling on Tuesday, an Additional District and Sessions Court in Pokhran delivered a life sentence with rigorous labor to Surender and his mother, Sita Kanwar, for their role in a dowry death case. The court also mandated a Rs 3 lakh fine for each individual.
The conviction relates to the death of Chandrakanwar, Surender's wife, who tragically passed away in June 2016 after allegedly being set on fire. The prosecution detailed that Chandrakanwar was subjected to continuous harassment and cruelty by her husband and in-laws shortly after her marriage in February 2015.
Despite her family's efforts to mediate and meet dowry demands, the abuse escalated. On June 19, 2016, Chandrakanwar reported being beaten and threatened with death, urging her family to rescue her. Tragically, before they could arrive, Surender and his mother allegedly inflicted severe burn injuries on her, leading to her death during treatment in Jodhpur.
