Dr. Mark Deakin, a consultant paediatrician formerly associated with Lucy Letby, has been named after reporting restrictions were removed following his death in July 2026. Dr. Deakin had received lifelong anonymity during Letby's trial, where she was convicted of murdering and attempting to murder infants at the Countess of Chester Hospital between June 2015 and June 2016.
Letby, who is serving a whole-life sentence, had reportedly developed a 'crush' on Dr. Deakin, with prosecutors suggesting she attacked some victims to attract his attention. Dr. Deakin stated that Letby had misled him regarding information about her victims. He exchanged numerous messages with her, and his name appeared on notes found at her home.
Dr. Deakin later supported Letby's grievance case and facilitated hospital visits. A complaint was filed against him by Child N's mother for allegedly sharing confidential information. He was reportedly dismissed for gross misconduct in June 2026 and found collapsed in his car, later dying in hospital. His death is being handled by Cheshire Coroner's Court.
