A third-year law student, Anoop Kumar, was apprehended by police in Lucknow just 24 hours after an FIR was filed against him. He is accused of defrauding a man of ₹10,000 by falsely promising to facilitate the transfer of an inherited arms license.
The complainant, Shanu, had sought to transfer his late father's licensed rifle. Anoop allegedly contacted Shanu on October 5, impersonating an arms clerk from the Hardoi Collectorate, and demanded ₹10,000 for the service.
Shanu transferred the money to an account provided by Anoop. However, the arms license was never transferred, and Anoop subsequently stopped responding, leading Shanu to report the incident to the Cyber Police Station.
Investigators recovered ₹9,000 and the mobile phone allegedly used in the scam from Anoop's possession. Police noted that Anoop reportedly wore a lawyer's robe when visiting Jan Seva Kendras to obtain account details from operators.
