Domenick Chavez, 33, has received a 15-year prison sentence following a plea agreement for manslaughter. The sentence is connected to the fatal 2023 crash that killed Laura Lynch, a founding member of The Dixie Chicks. Chavez admitted to driving in excess of 100 miles per hour at the time of the head-on collision.
The crash occurred in Hudspeth County, Texas, near Cornudas, as Chavez attempted to pass multiple vehicles on the highway. Investigators determined his speed ranged from 106 to 114 mph. Lynch, 65, who split her time between Fort Worth and Dell City, was killed instantly. Chavez, who had a suspended license due to prior DWI convictions, sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Laura Lynch co-founded The Dixie Chicks in 1990 and played bass on their first three albums before departing in 1993. The band, now known as The Chicks, honored their former bandmate, recalling her significant role in the group's early success and her "infectious energy."
El Paso District Attorney James Montoya stated that the office will continue to hold accountable those who drive dangerously. The sentencing concludes the legal proceedings for the December 2023 wreck.
