An officer with the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) has been accused of exaggerating an on-duty injury to fraudulently collect disability benefits. Christopher Brandon Carnahan, 43, a 17-year veteran of the LAPD, was charged with insurance fraud on Monday.
Carnahan reportedly claimed he injured his left elbow on May 22, 2023, leading to his placement on Temporary Totally Disabled (TTD) status. Police on TTD status are entitled to receive 100% of their base salary tax-free for up to a year.
Contrary to his claims of being unable to work, Carnahan is alleged to have participated in strenuous physical activities, including working out and completing numerous skydives at Skydive Elsinore. Photos have been released showing the officer skydiving and at a fitness center.
He faces two counts of felony insurance fraud and is being held on $100,000 bail. If convicted, Carnahan could be sentenced to six years in county jail. The LAPD is expected to review his employment status pending the trial's outcome.
