An officer with the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) has been accused of exaggerating an on-duty injury to fraudulently collect disability benefits. Christopher Brandon Carnahan, 43, a 17-year veteran of the LAPD, was charged with insurance fraud on Monday.
Carnahan reportedly claimed he injured his left elbow on May 22, 2023, leading to his placement on Temporary Totally Disabled (TTD) status. Police on TTD status are entitled to receive 100% of their base salary tax-free for up to a year.
