A fatal officer-involved shooting occurred Thursday afternoon in Hollywood when Los Angeles Police Department officers encountered a man armed with a knife. The incident began around 3:35 p.m. at an apartment complex on North Bronson Avenue, following reports of a suicidal individual. The person, identified as 38-year-old Juan Guerrero Rojo, had reportedly made threats, stating he was armed and would harm anyone who approached.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers announced their presence and heard yelling from inside the apartment. The situation escalated when Guerrero Rojo abruptly opened the door and then charged toward officers wielding a large kitchen knife. A less-lethal foam launcher was deployed simultaneously with officers discharging their firearms.
Paramedics transported Guerrero Rojo to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. Fortunately, no officers or bystanders sustained injuries during the confrontation. Detectives recovered the knife from the scene as evidence. The Los Angeles County Office of Medical Examiner later identified the deceased.
