The Los Angeles Police Department has cracked down on unauthorized street takeovers, specifically addressing a large gathering of minibike riders on the 6th Street Bridge. On Sunday, the department's Street Racing Task Force encountered over 70 individuals riding minibikes, blocking the bridge, and engaging in dangerous maneuvers. Authorities noted that the event appeared to be led by older adults, some identified as parents of the minor participants.
Minibikes, also known as pocket bikes, present significant safety risks due to their lack of required safety equipment, low visibility, and high instability. The LAPD stated that these activities endanger riders, motorists, and pedestrians, while also disrupting essential traffic flow. The department's approach focused on education and protection, particularly for the numerous underage participants, to avert potential catastrophic injuries.
During the operation, approximately 70 citations were issued, and around 70 minibikes were impounded. One participant, Marvin Deleon, was cited along with his 13-year-old daughter, Leilani, arguing that riding together under parental supervision should not be illegal. Despite his objections and claims that the event was a 'rideout' and not a 'takeover,' the LAPD proceeded with enforcement under California Vehicle Code Section 21720, emphasizing their commitment to public safety and preventing tragedies.
