In the early hours of Sunday, August 30, 2026, a brazen burglary occurred at a Superior Grocers store in South Los Angeles. The incident unfolded amidst a street takeover, with at least 20 individuals forcibly entering the establishment. Responding officers from the Los Angeles Police Department arrived at approximately 4:30 a.m. and managed to apprehend one suspect. Employees who were present during the break-in took refuge on the store's second floor, where they barricaded themselves to ensure their safety. Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the incident.
The extent of the stolen items remains undetermined, and officials have not yet announced when the store will be able to resume operations. This event is not isolated, as several other businesses have recently fallen victim to crimes associated with illegal street takeovers. For instance, an AutoZone store was looted four times within a few days at locations in East L.A., Watts, and Downey, all around 3 a.m. Additionally, a pharmacy in Boyle Heights was recently targeted, with thieves seen cutting through security bars and smashing windows before making off with merchandise. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department has established a dedicated task force to combat these street takeovers and the subsequent criminal activities.
