A devastating incident at Reseda High School in Los Angeles has resulted in the death of 12-year-old Khimberly Zavaleta. The student succumbed to a severe head injury sustained days earlier during a school dismissal hallway altercation. Her family asserts that another student struck Khimberly in the head with a metal water bottle while she was intervening to protect her older sister from a group.
Initially evaluated and released from a hospital, Khimberly's health rapidly declined. She was later admitted to an emergency room with no vital signs, where doctors discovered severe brain bleeding. Despite emergency surgery and intensive medical care at UCLA Children's Hospital, her condition did not improve, and she was pronounced deceased. The Los Angeles Police Department's Robbery-Homicide Division is investigating the case as a homicide.
In response to this tragedy, Khimberly's family is advocating for "The Khimberly Act," a proposed legislation aiming to establish national standardized protocols for evaluating pediatric head injuries. They highlight federal data indicating traumatic brain injuries as a leading cause of childhood death and disability, emphasizing the need for clearer medical guidelines and training. Students have gathered on campus to protest and show support for the family, seeking justice.
