In Kanpur, additional district and sessions judge Subhash Chandra convicted three individuals on Tuesday in the Kushagra murder case. Ruchika Vats, her paramour Prabhat Shukla, and Shiva Gupta were found guilty of kidnapping and murder.
Shukla and Gupta were convicted of kidnapping, murder, and causing the disappearance of evidence. Vats was found guilty of kidnapping and murder. The court has scheduled January 22 for arguments on the quantum of sentence.
The crime occurred on October 30, 2023, when Kushagra, a student, was abducted for ransom. He was allegedly strangled by Prabhat Shukla at his residence, with Gupta and Vats present. A ransom letter was sent to the victim's family.
The investigation gained traction when an apartment guard identified the scooty used in the crime, leading to Vats' arrest and the unraveling of the conspiracy. Charges were framed on May 3, 2024, with 14 witnesses examined during the trial.
