In June, a tragic murder-suicide in Mechanicville, New York, resulted in the deaths of four children, their mother, and their grandmother. Authorities have since released toxicology reports detailing substances found in the deceased.
All six individuals had diphenhydramine, commonly found in allergy medication, in their systems. More alarmingly, four of the victims, including the children, also tested positive for mitragynine, the primary compound in kratom. The DEA has designated kratom as a "Drug and Chemical of Concern."
The father of the children had been seeking custody for years, with the children scheduled to visit him in Utah shortly after the killings. The investigation into the exact circumstances of the deaths is ongoing.
