A 30-year-old woman has died from extensive burn injuries after being set on fire two days ago in Kolkata. She succumbed to her injuries on Monday at SSKM Hospital, having sustained 90% burns. The victim was able to provide a dying declaration to the police before her death.
Based on her statement, police arrested Siddhartha Chariwal, the prime suspect. He allegedly lured the victim to the Maidan area for a purported interview. A heated argument ensued, after which he allegedly poured kerosene on her and set her ablaze.
Passersby and local police rushed the severely burnt victim to the hospital. Her mother stated that the victim had left home for a job interview and later stopped responding to calls. The victim identified Chariwal as her attacker in her final moments, mentioning his prior pressure for marriage and job offers.
Investigators are working to confirm the motive, exploring possibilities of a failed romantic pursuit or other disputes. The accused faces elevated charges from attempted murder to murder following the victim's death. His bail plea has been rejected, and police are reconstructing the events leading to the attack.
