Kolkata is experiencing a sharp rise in drink driving incidents as the festive season continues. In the past week, authorities recorded 472 cases, averaging 67 cases per day, a substantial increase compared to last year's average of 40 daily cases. On Dashami, 122 cases were reported, with other festival days seeing 105-110 cases.
Most offenders apprehended were motorcyclists, with violations frequently occurring at major intersections and along the EM Bypass. Police are actively identifying accident-prone zones, particularly in southern and southeastern parts of the city, as well as certain areas in north Kolkata.
In response, traffic police have implemented varied surveillance methods at checkpoints, including helmet checks and direct questioning. With more festivals and winter events approaching, police anticipate continued high numbers and plan to establish additional night checkpoints. These measures will also target illegal firecrackers, with raids expected at approximately 50 locations citywide.
