Kolkata Family Assaulted for Protesting Loud Fireworks During Kali Puja Immersion

On the night of October 21st, 2025, a family of seven living on Tollygunge Road in Kolkata was allegedly attacked and harassed after they protested against the bursting of high-decibel firecrackers during a Kali Puja immersion procession.

According to the complainant, a group of around 12 to 14 young men barged into their house and assaulted the family members. Two women were reportedly molested, and a four-year-old child was left terrified. The attackers also vandalized the family's belongings before fleeing the scene.

The incident was the 12th reported case of violence in the city related to Kali Puja immersions this year. However, in a departure from past instances, both the police and local political leadership reacted swiftly. South Kolkata MP Mala Roy rushed to the spot, and the Tollygunge Police picked up two of the accused within hours.

The family claimed they had asked the local residents to stop bursting loud firecrackers, as it was frightening the young child. This angered the group, who then launched the attack. The victims said they kept calling the police, but the response seemed delayed until the MP intervened.

The Sashan Kali Puja organizers, however, claimed the incident was a result of an old enmity and had nothing to do with the immersion procession. Regardless, the attack has left the family traumatized and the community shaken by the latest episode of violence during the festive season.
