On October 15, 2025, Kolkata Police arrested Rupa Dutta, a former TV actress, for allegedly stealing gold ornaments from a shop in the Posta area. This was the second time Dutta, 42, had been arrested, as she was previously caught for pickpocketing at a book fair earlier this year.
According to the police, Dutta had stolen a gold mangalsutra, a gold chain with a Vaishno Devi locket, two gold bracelets, and Rs 4,000 in cash from a woman's purse while she was at a shop in Posta. The theft was captured on CCTV, and after reviewing the footage and questioning Dutta, the police detained her near Nandaram Market in the Burrabazar area on the evening of October 31, 2025.
During the investigation, the police recovered the stolen gold jewelry, weighing about 63g, from Dutta's home on Garcha Road. Dutta, who used to be a familiar face in Kolkata's acting circles, had worked in the Hindi serial 'Jai Maa Vaishnodevi' and some Bengali films. The police said that the CCTV footage obtained would be crucial to the ongoing investigation.
