Kirklees Council has committed nearly £2 million to modernise its extensive network of 134 CCTV cameras. This strategic investment, amounting to £1.92 million, is designed to enhance safety across towns such as Huddersfield, Dewsbury, and Batley.
The current CCTV infrastructure relies on older analogue technology that has become increasingly challenging to maintain. The council plans to roll out newer, more dependable technology through a procurement process expected to begin soon.
Councillor Simon Brophy highlighted that the upgrade is crucial for reducing anti-social behaviour and preventing crime. He also noted that improved surveillance, in partnership with the police, will aid enforcement, revitalise town centres, and bolster civic pride and local businesses.
