Kiefer Sutherland has denied accusations that he choked an Uber driver and threatened to kill him during a rideshare dispute. His spokesperson stated that the driver is attempting to embellish claims for millions of dollars in compensation.
The actor was detained by LAPD officers in January for allegedly making criminal threats, a felony violation of California Penal Code section 422. The altercation reportedly occurred because Sutherland repeatedly asked to be let out of the Uber Black vehicle.
The Uber driver, Rafael Manvelyan, has filed a lawsuit alleging assault, battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and negligence. The suit claims communication was difficult as Manvelyan primarily speaks Russian and Armenian.
Manvelyan alleges Sutherland became hostile, then physically assaulted him by punching and applying a choke hold. The lawsuit claims Sutherland chased the driver, threatening to kill him, and that a dashcam may have recorded the incident.
Manvelyan's legal team states he suffered physical and psychological injuries, including ongoing anxiety and nightmares, fearing for his life. He is seeking damages for medical treatment and loss of earnings.
Sutherland's spokesperson asserts that the driver is seeking a massive payday by crafting a distorted account. Sutherland intends to fight the lawsuit, stating he has no interest in rewarding such behavior.
This incident adds to Sutherland's history of legal troubles, including past DUI offenses. Separately, Sutherland recently canceled the U.S. leg of his concert tour due to low ticket sales.
