Council Steps In To Demolish Dangerous Kettering Flats
7 Oct
Summary
- Council will demolish an unsafe six-storey block after developer failure.
- Developer found guilty of endangering public and breaching safety orders.
- High Court ruling allows council to proceed with demolition in default.
An unsafe six-storey block of flats in Kettering, Northamptonshire, is slated for demolition by North Northamptonshire Council. This action follows the developer's failure to tear down the building after a series of planning breaches.
Marcus Fielding, the developer, and his company, Michigan Construction, were previously found guilty of endangering the public and contravening safety regulations. Fielding also breached orders prohibiting him from working on the structure.
A High Court ruling in April 2024 granted the council the authority to demolish the building in default. This followed the developer's non-compliance with the required demolition by the set deadline. A demolition notice has now been submitted.
Fielding and his company faced charges at Northampton Magistrates' Court, where they were found guilty. Sentencing for Fielding is scheduled for January 8, 2027. He was previously released on bail and warned of a potential jail term.
