Kerala HC: Rs 9.73 Cr Compensation Due in 5 Weeks
18 Oct
Summary
- Court mandates Rs 9.73 crore compensation payout within five weeks.
- Mediators' honorarium revised, future payments to be timely.
- Infrastructure at mediation centers across Kerala to be reviewed.
The Kerala High Court has issued a stern directive to the state government, mandating the release of Rs 9.73 crore in victim compensation pending across 225 cases. This substantial sum is to be disbursed preferably within five weeks from the order date. The court emphasized the urgent need for timely future payments and a review of mediation infrastructure.
A bench led by Chief Justice Soumen Sen also addressed the matter of mediators' honorarium, directing the release of payments at revised rates while reconsidering the amounts based on a 2022 proposal. This follows concerns raised by the Kerala State Legal Services Authority (KeLSA) regarding previously recommended rates.
Further directions were given to ensure no future delays in processing victim compensation. Secretaries of District Legal Services Authorities (DLSAs) are tasked with collecting all necessary documents at adjudication to streamline the payout process. KeLSA is to monitor compensation payments weekly and report to the court.
