A Cherokee County man, Kyle Lynn Butts, 45, has received two consecutive life sentences for the Nov. 28, 2022, shooting deaths of Jeremy Murphy and Craig Guinn. The sentences were handed down on Monday by Judge Maradeth Frederick. Butts was also convicted of the attempted murder of Seth Guinn and interference with law enforcement.
Following a five-day trial on Jan. 9, Butts was found guilty of two counts of first-degree murder, one count of first-degree attempted murder, and one count of interference with law enforcement. Kansas law mandates a minimum of 50 years for premeditated first-degree murder. The judge ordered consecutive sentences for all four counts, meaning Butts must serve at least 100 years before parole eligibility.
