In Kanpur, a 19-year-old youth named Rahul Tiwari succumbed to his injuries on Monday, July 20, 2026, following a brutal assault that occurred on the night of July 18. The victim's family reported that the attack, which involved nine assailants including a father and son, happened after Tiwari intervened to protect an elderly woman from being mistreated.
Rahul Tiwari and his uncle, Santosh Kumar Tiwari, sustained severe head injuries and were admitted to Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital. The victim was pronounced dead around 3 am on Monday. Police have registered a case against the nine accused under sections related to culpable homicide not amounting to murder and have taken three suspects into custody for questioning.
According to Rahul's maternal uncle, Ashish Kumar Dixit, the incident escalated when neighbours Lallu and Kallu began assaulting an elderly woman. When Rahul protested and attempted to intervene, he and his uncle Santosh were allegedly attacked with sticks and batons. The family further alleges that the accused continued their assault with an iron rod even after the injured had received treatment and returned from the hospital.
