A Mexican judge, Luis Benítez Alcántara, was apprehended in Colombia on Sunday, facing charges related to accepting a $2 million bribe. Officials allege Alcántara accepted the payment to release Canadian Andrew Clark, who was under extradition proceedings in Mexico.
Clark faced charges in the US for allegedly aiding a billion-dollar drug trafficking operation. This operation is reportedly headed by Ryan Wedding, a former Canadian Olympic snowboarder and now a top FBI fugitive. Wedding was arrested earlier this year in Mexico.
Clark was recaptured days after his release and subsequently extradited to the United States. He is currently facing drug trafficking and murder charges. The US attorney general stated that corrupt public officials assisting drug traffickers will face justice in the United States. Dozens have been arrested in connection with the alleged network.
