Joran van der Sloot, the man convicted in the death of Natalee Holloway, reportedly attempted to take his own life in a Peruvian maximum-security prison on December 12, 2025. Prison guards discovered the 38-year-old near death in his cell and intervened to save him. Van der Sloot, who was transferred to Challapalca prison in October 2023, expressed despair, stating he no longer wished to live due to the harsh conditions and separation from family.
He is currently serving a 28-year sentence for the 2010 murder of Stephany Flores. In January 2025, an additional 18-year sentence was imposed for drug smuggling. He also received a 20-year concurrent sentence for extorting Holloway's mother, Beth Holloway, after the crime.
Van der Sloot eventually confessed to killing Holloway in May 2005 on a beach in Aruba. He admitted to beating her to death after she refused his advances and disposing of her body in the Caribbean. His confession followed a plea agreement where he promised to reveal Holloway's burial location in exchange for payment.
