A tragic incident over the weekend in Joliet has led to a 29-year-old man being charged with six counts of first-degree murder. Responding to calls of shots fired on Sunday morning, police discovered Joselynn Diaz Garcia, 36, and her 4-year-old son deceased in their backyard from apparent gunshot wounds.
Witnesses reported seeing a man discarding a weapon near train tracks while fleeing the scene. Officers located the suspect with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his ankle and the firearm nearby. He was taken to Loyola Medical Center for treatment.
The suspect, identified as Joseph D. Johnson, remains hospitalized. Upon his release, he will be transferred to Will County jail. A 9-year-old boy, believed to be Garcia's other son, was found unharmed inside the home. The investigation remains active.
