Downtown Jacksonville Beach has seen a significant increase in surveillance, with 49 cameras, including six license plate readers, recently counted across 12 blocks. Residents expressed varied opinions on the heightened monitoring, with some appreciating the potential safety benefits while others felt a sense of being constantly watched.
The Jacksonville Beach Police Department confirmed that nine additional Flock cameras were installed in December. This installation was part of the city's Public Safety Technology Enhancement Program, approved by the City Council. These cameras are intended to aid law enforcement in solving cases more rapidly and ensuring public safety.
The cost and maintenance for these new cameras are projected to be $67,500 from the current year through 2030. While the police department did not confirm facial recognition capabilities, the cameras are a permanent fixture aimed at serving the community.
