30 Jan
Summary
- Child abuse reports in Japan exceeded 220,000 for two years.
- Psychological abuse constitutes nearly 60% of all reported cases.
- Child welfare centers are under pressure, aiming to increase staff.

Government data released Friday indicates that child abuse reports in Japan have now surpassed 220,000 for the second fiscal year in a row. While the total number of reports in fiscal 2024 saw a slight decrease from the previous year, it remains the second highest level recorded since fiscal 1990.
Psychological abuse represents the most significant category, comprising 133,024 of the total reports. This includes a substantial number of instances where children witnessed domestic violence. Physical abuse, neglect, and sexual abuse also remain significant concerns, with police being the primary source of reporting.
Child welfare centers, numbering 240 nationwide as of April 2025, are experiencing mounting pressure due to the high volume of consultations. In response, the government is prioritizing efforts to increase the number of child welfare officers and psychologists available at these facilities.
