Court Orders Rs 5 Lakh Payout for Bull Attack Victim
28 May
Summary
- Court ordered insurance payout for bull attack death.
- Insurance company cited investigation report objections.
- Judge overruled objections, citing policy purpose.

In a significant ruling, the Madras High Court has directed an insurance company to pay Rs 5 lakh to the widow of a man who was fatally gored by a bull during a jallikattu event. The incident occurred in Ratchandar Thirumalai village in Karur district in 2025. The deceased's wife, K Mathuram, had filed a petition after the United India Insurance Company Limited denied her claim.
The insurance company's counsel presented two primary objections based on an investigation report. Firstly, they argued that the victim was near the bull collection point, and secondly, that the FIR did not name the specific bull's owner. Justice D Bharatha Chakravarthy dismissed the first objection, noting the FIR didn't state the victim had strayed into the bulls' path. The second objection regarding the bull owner's name was deemed hyper-technical, with the judge highlighting that insurance policies are purchased precisely to cover such unforeseen tragedies.
