Jailed Mephedrone Kingpin Exploits Social Media to Expand Criminal Empire

In a startling revelation, the Nagpur police's anti-narcotics cell has dismantled a sophisticated narcotics syndicate orchestrated by notorious Mumbai-based mephedrone (MD) kingpin Akbar Khan from within the Nagpur Central Jail.

Khan, who was transferred to the Nagpur prison earlier this year, managed to create a vast network by luring and radicalizing fellow inmates through covert communications on social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram. He exploited these digital channels to expand his illicit drug empire, promising lucrative returns to recruits like 29-year-old Chetan Mahato, who had several prior criminal cases.

The police's recent crackdown led to the seizure of 106 grams of MD powder, valued at approximately Rs6 lakh, and the arrest of Mahato, Khan's key operative. During interrogation, Mahato revealed Khan as his supplier, exposing the kingpin's prison-based network.

This operation marks a significant blow to Mumbai's mephedrone trade, but the revelation of such organized criminal activities flourishing behind bars underscores an urgent need for prison reforms to curb the growing challenge of jailed criminals leveraging technology to sustain and expand their operations.
