15 Jul
Summary
- Firefighter faces termination after arrest for alleged crack cocaine sales.
- Transactions allegedly occurred before his hiring in November 2024.
- Investigation delay of nearly three years raises legal questions.

A Jacksonville firefighter, Latavior Stephens, has been suspended without pay and is awaiting termination after his arrest by the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office. The charges stem from alleged crack cocaine sales that investigators claim took place before Stephens was hired by the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department in November 2024. Stephens was arrested on July 9th.
According to an arrest report, Stephens is accused of facilitating four crack cocaine transactions involving an undercover deputy in September 2023. Investigators noted that some alleged sales occurred near a city park and a church. Stephens was reportedly captured on audio and video recordings assisting in these transactions, which involved just under one gram of crack cocaine.
Despite these allegations, Stephens was hired by the fire department as he had not yet been charged. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office stated the arrest was part of a "long-term investigation." This significant delay has prompted scrutiny from legal experts, with criminal defense attorney Michelle Suskauer noting the unusual length of time for such a drug case to result in an arrest.
Stephens faces five charges, with his next court date scheduled for July 30th. The circumstances surrounding the investigation's delay are expected to be a focus as the case progresses.
