Teen's Chemistry Experiment Triggers FBI Probe
3 Mar
Summary
- FBI investigated suspicious materials at an Irvine home.
- A 17-year-old student's science project caused the probe.
- Family awaits return to their home after a week-long investigation.

An FBI investigation into potentially hazardous materials found at an Irvine residence has concluded, according to the family's attorney. The week-long probe was initiated due to a 17-year-old college student's science experiment conducted at his home. The student, who dreams of becoming a doctor and has a YouTube channel documenting his work, was reportedly synthesizing chemicals that are easily obtainable.
While authorities initially indicated the possible presence of a nerve agent, the family's attorney, Charles Ray, stated the chemicals were innocuous and the student was merely pursuing his passion for science. The family has been staying in a hotel during the investigation and cleanup process, which is being managed by the California Department of Toxic Substances Control.
No arrests have been made in connection with the incident. The FBI has stated its investigation is ongoing, though the materials were deemed non-threatening. The family is awaiting official notification to return to their rented home in the Altair community.
