24 Jul
Summary
- Irish police arrested two individuals during a planned operation.
- A highly sophisticated car bomb was discovered and made safe.
- The plot is believed to be linked to dissident republican groups.

Irish police have arrested a man and a woman after intercepting a sophisticated car bomb in County Monaghan, near the border with Northern Ireland. The device was discovered during a planned operation and subsequently made safe by the Irish Army's Explosive Ordnance Disposal team. Authorities described the bomb as "extremely significant" and one of the most sophisticated improvised explosive devices recovered in recent years.
The two suspects, both in their 40s, were arrested under Ireland's offenses against the state legislation and are currently in custody for questioning. Investigators suspect the bomb was intended for use by dissident republican militants who oppose the 1998 Good Friday Agreement. Security officials have warned that although dissident republican groups are small, they continue to pose a threat through sporadic attacks targeting police and security forces, with heightened concerns over renewed militant activity along the Irish border.
