6 Mar
Summary
- Irish fugitive lived as burger seller in Thailand for nearly a decade.
- He used a dead man's identity and a fake passport to evade justice.
- Caught in July 2024, he received an 18-year prison sentence.

Paul Noel Casey, an Irish national wanted in Australia for drug offences, has been sentenced to 18 years in prison in Thailand. Casey fled Australia in 2015 to avoid sentencing on charges related to ecstasy possession and significant cash. He subsequently established a new life in Thailand, residing on the island of Ko Pha Ngan under the identity of Alan Murray, a fellow Irishman who had died in 2016.
For almost a decade, Casey operated a burger bar, known locally as Alan Murray, even naming a signature dish 'The Aussie'. His decade-long evasion ended in June 2023 when Australian tourists recognized him and reported his whereabouts. Following this tip, Australian authorities alerted their Thai counterparts.
Casey attempted to evade capture by fleeing to Hua Hin, over 500km away, where he moved between hotels. His final arrest occurred in July 2024 as he was helping his wife with groceries. The Hua Hin Provincial Court sentenced him to over 30 years for passport forgery and overstaying his visa, a sentence reduced to 18 years upon his confession.
