Family Seeks Urgent Transfer for Inmate Amid Prison Deaths
8 Jul
Summary
- Family seeks inmate transfer due to mold allergy and respiratory issues.
- Fourth inmate death reported at facility in just two months.
- Prison officials deny dangerous mold levels and medical necessity for transfer.

The family of Krystal Clark has initiated legal action, filing an emergency motion to transfer her from the Women's Huron Valley Correctional Facility in Michigan. They cite her severe mold allergy, respiratory issues, and an ongoing infectious disease as reasons for concern. This move follows the recent death of Dalephenia Jones on July 2, marking the fourth fatality at the facility in approximately two months. Three other women, Rebecca Fackler, Khiara Howard, and Ashley Hoath, died in May and June.
Clark's family fears for her life, especially with her release date only 11 months away. Attorney Shiraz Khan emphasized the urgency of the motion given the recent deaths and Clark's deteriorating health, stating the need for her immediate transfer to a medically secure facility. However, the Michigan Department of Corrections maintains that independent environmental tests show no dangerous mold levels and that Clark's medical condition does not warrant a transfer, asserting that she receives consistent medical care.
Former inmates and staff have raised concerns about the prison's conditions. Dominica Simms, who knew Clark, suggested that the facility's environment and pre-existing conditions have contributed to serious illnesses. Andi Allen, a former mental health worker fired from the prison, expressed no surprise at the deaths, citing a lack of action and fear among staff who speak out.
