India's new rule: 5 violations, license gone!

In India, a new amendment to motor vehicle rules introduces stricter penalties for traffic offenders. Drivers accumulating five or more violations within a year may have their licenses suspended. This provision, effective from January 1, 2026, applies to offenses recorded within a single twelve-month period. Previous years' violations will not count towards this total.
The competent authority, such as the Regional Transport Office or District Transport Office, will decide the duration of the suspension. This change aims to curb habitual offenders and enhance road safety. Importantly, even a combination of minor offenses can lead to suspension if the threshold of five is met.
Separately, new rules also address unpaid toll charges. Vehicles with pending toll dues will face restrictions on essential services like obtaining No Objection Certificates for inter-state transfers, renewing fitness certificates, or obtaining national permits for commercial vehicles until payments are cleared.
