The court was hearing a plea seeking the Indian government's intervention to save Priya, who was on death row in Yemen.
The Attorney General, representing the Indian government, told the court that a new mediator has stepped into the matter, and that "nothing adverse is happening" at the moment. The petitioner's counsel confirmed that the execution has been stayed for now.
The 38-year-old nurse, who hails from Palakkad in Kerala, India, was convicted in 2017 and sentenced to death in 2020. Her final appeal was rejected in 2023. The Indian government has been making efforts to ensure Priya's safe return, including exploring the possibility of paying blood money to the victim's family, which is permissible under Sharia law.
The Supreme Court has adjourned the case until January 2026, but has left it open for the parties to apply for an earlier hearing if the situation demands it.
