Judges Barred from Using ChatGPT for Rulings
6 Apr
Summary
- High courts in India are prohibiting AI tool usage by judges.
- AI is banned for drafting judgments and legal research.
- Judges bear personal liability for any AI-assisted outputs.

Judges in the Punjab and Haryana High Courts, along with the Union Territory of Chandigarh, have been prohibited from using artificial intelligence tools. This directive, communicated on April 6, specifically restricts the use of AI such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot for drafting judgments or performing legal research. Judicial officers were warned that any non-compliance would be taken seriously.
This move follows a similar policy enacted by the Gujarat High Court on April 5. The Gujarat policy explicitly bars judges and court staff from employing AI in judicial decision-making, order drafting, or judgment preparation. Furthermore, it prohibits AI's influence on judicial reasoning, findings of fact, or law, even if later reviewed by a judge.
