India Census 2027: Scammers Target Data
15 Apr
Summary
- Scammers pose as census workers to steal personal and financial data.
- Real census enumerators will not ask for bank details, passwords, or IDs.
- Self-enumeration is a secure online option before the physical survey.

With India's 2026-27 Census approaching, a rise in scams targeting citizens is being reported. Fraudsters are impersonating census enumerators and employing tactics like fake home visits, phishing websites, and misleading messages to obtain personal and financial data. Authorities emphasize that legitimate census workers will never ask for bank account numbers, UPI PINs, OTPs, passwords, or photocopies of Aadhaar or PAN cards. They also will not request money for verification or demand entry into homes.
To enhance the census process, a secure, web-based 'Self-Enumeration' facility is available in 16 languages. This allows respondents to conveniently fill in their details online before a physical enumerator's visit. A unique Self-Enumeration ID (SE ID) is generated upon submission and shared with the enumerator for confirmation. The Houselisting and Housing Census phase, collecting data on housing conditions and amenities, will run from April 1 to September 30, 2026.
