Fishermen Freed: India & Bangladesh Exchange Detainees
29 Jan
Summary
- 23 Indian and 128 Bangladeshi fishermen were repatriated.
- Arrests occurred after fishermen inadvertently crossed maritime borders.
- Governments prioritized humanitarian and livelihood concerns.

In a significant humanitarian gesture, India and Bangladesh concluded a joint operation on Thursday, January 29, 2026, to release and repatriate fishermen. The exercise saw the return of 23 Indian fishermen and 128 Bangladeshi fishermen, along with their operational vessels.
This operation stems from fishermen from both nations being apprehended by authorities after inadvertently crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line. The Ministry of External Affairs highlighted that this mutual exchange prioritizes the well-being and livelihood needs of fishing communities on both sides of the border.
This repatriation follows similar exchanges. In December 2025 and January 2025, India facilitated the release of 142 Indian fishermen and, in a reciprocal move, 128 Bangladeshi fishermen were returned. The Indian High Commission in Bangladesh closely monitored the welfare of its citizens during their detention, ensuring essential provisions and support were provided.
