This operation stems from fishermen from both nations being apprehended by authorities after inadvertently crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line. The Ministry of External Affairs highlighted that this mutual exchange prioritizes the well-being and livelihood needs of fishing communities on both sides of the border.
This repatriation follows similar exchanges. In December 2025 and January 2025, India facilitated the release of 142 Indian fishermen and, in a reciprocal move, 128 Bangladeshi fishermen were returned. The Indian High Commission in Bangladesh closely monitored the welfare of its citizens during their detention, ensuring essential provisions and support were provided.
