A woman who impersonated medical professionals using stolen identities has received a sentence of over six years in federal prison. Leticia Gallarzo pleaded guilty to identity theft charges, stemming from her creation of a fraudulent nurse's license to secure employment in Michigan.
This conviction follows a prior prison sentence in Texas for impersonating a nurse. While awaiting sentencing in Michigan, Gallarzo absconded and worked in the Chicago area as a physician's assistant, using another person's credentials. She was ultimately apprehended last September near Los Angeles, where she was again working as a nurse without valid qualifications.
U.S. District Judge Paul Maloney handed down the sentence on Tuesday. Gallarzo's defense attorney cited a history of mental health struggles, noting her desire to care for people but acknowledging the unacceptability of her actions, especially after prior punishment.
