Hidden Stash: 3,743 Illicit Cigarettes Seized!

A significant haul of contraband goods, including 3,743 packets of illicit cigarettes and 23kg of illegal hand-rolling tobacco, was seized by West Northamptonshire Council's trading standards officers. The operation, which took place on March 25 and 26, also uncovered 198 illegal vapes and £10,000 in cash from shops in Northampton and Daventry.

Officers found some of the illegal items concealed in cars outside the shops. More sophisticated hiding places included a false wall and electric-powered shelving hidden beneath a serving counter. These goods did not meet British safety standards and had evaded UK duty payments.

This successful enforcement action follows a similar seizure of illegal cigarettes in the same towns back in February. Council officials stated the confiscated items will be destroyed, emphasizing their commitment to national efforts against the illegal market. The operation highlights the risks associated with illicit tobacco and vapes, often linked to organized crime.
