Illegal Pet Seller Jailed for Animal Cruelty
13 Feb
Summary
- Man jailed for participating in fraudulent business.
- Animals kept in poor conditions, causing suffering.
- Estimated turnover of the illegal business was £300,000.

Robert Gillan, 40, has been sentenced to two years and eight months in prison for running an illegal pet shop from his home in Rugeley, Staffordshire. The court heard that Gillan pleaded guilty to participating in a fraudulent business, failing to ensure the welfare of animals, and offering endangered species for sale without a certificate. Raids conducted in May 2022 and December 2023 uncovered animals, including parrots and sugar gliders, kept in deplorable conditions, such as mouldy aviaries and cages lacking food or water, leading to unnecessary suffering.
The illegal enterprise reportedly operated for six years, with conservative estimates of its turnover reaching approximately £300,000. Despite a reduction in the number of animals found during the second inspection, conditions remained unhygienic. The sentencing judge criticized Gillan's actions as a "cynical exploitation of animals" driven by profit maximization. In addition to his prison sentence, Gillan received a 10-year disqualification order, prohibiting him from trading or keeping animals, although his family may retain their pet dogs and chinchilla.
