Authorities in Varanasi have intercepted a large consignment of illicit codeine-based cough syrup, seizing approximately 30,000 bottles valued at Rs 60 lakh. The warehouse, located in the Sujabad area under Ramnagar police station, was found stocked with the contraband. This discovery is reportedly linked to the operations of Shubham Jaiswal, identified as the kingpin of a wider syndicate.
Further bolstering the investigation, police have apprehended two key associates of Jaiswal in Kolkata. These arrests bring the total number of individuals detained in connection with this codeine syrup smuggling case to five. A pickup van found at the scene, registered under an arrested individual's name, suggests a well-established network.
The ongoing probe also involves law enforcement from Sonbhadra, who have brought four accused individuals from Ghaziabad jail to Varanasi for interrogation. The interlinked nature of these seizures and arrests highlights a significant operation involving the siphoning and smuggling of codeine cough syrup across multiple locations.
