Judge Orders ICE Release Amid Medical Neglect Claims
17 Feb
Summary
- Man released from ICE detention due to medical failures.
- Judge cited extreme pain and permanent disability.
- Two foot amputation surgeries occurred during detention.

A federal judge has ordered the release of Greggy Sorio from an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facility in Tacoma, Washington. The ruling came after Judge Tana Lin identified a "pattern of failures" in Sorio's medical care.
Lin stated these failures "more likely than not resulted in extreme pain and permanent disability." Sorio's health reportedly declined significantly while he was detained, leading to two partial foot amputation surgeries. He also suffered from ulcerative colitis, blood loss, a kidney injury, and dramatic unintended weight loss.
Sorio, a lawful permanent resident since 2007, was detained by ICE in March after his release from prison. He was held at the Northwest ICE Processing Center. Reports indicate he complained of severe symptoms in July but was denied hospital requests.
By October, Sorio was in extreme pain. Although eventually sent to a hospital, ICE staff allegedly failed to fill a prescribed antibiotic. Days later, a foot infection led to the surgeries. Sorio stated that earlier medical attention could have prevented the loss of his foot.
