Cyber Cops Bust Nationwide Movie Piracy Ring, Arrest 5 Suspects

In a major crackdown, the Hyderabad cyber crime police have dismantled a nationwide movie piracy network, arresting five individuals involved in illegally recording and distributing films. The investigation, which began on June 5 after a complaint from the Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce, has uncovered a complex web of criminal activity.

Authorities have discovered that online betting platforms were funding the piracy operations, highlighting a sophisticated nexus between illegal entertainment distribution and digital gambling. The arrested suspects include a 29-year-old AC technician, a 32-year-old computer engineer, and several others from across India who were involved in recording, hacking, and selling pirated movies.

The arrests have exposed the massive financial impact of piracy on the Indian entertainment industry. In 2023, the industry lost an estimated ₹22,400 crore, with the Telugu film industry alone suffering a ₹3,700 crore loss in 2024. Producers have praised the police action and urged the public to avoid consuming pirated content or falling prey to betting platforms.
