On October 23, 2025, a senior police officer in Hyderabad's South East Zone, DCP S Chaitanya Kumar, was involved in a shooting incident that left a wanted criminal injured. The accused, Mohammed Omer Ansari, has been facing over 20 criminal cases since 2010, including charges of attempted murder, robbery, extortion, and arms possession.
The incident unfolded around 5 pm near Koti Women's College, where DCP Kumar noticed two offenders snatching a mobile phone from an autorickshaw passenger. The officer, accompanied by his gunman Murthy, immediately gave chase as the duo fled towards Esamia Bazar and then to Victory Playground through narrow bylanes.
The offenders climbed onto a house terrace near the playground and jumped down in an attempt to escape, with the gunman chasing them on foot. When Kumar and Murthy caught and tried to apprehend them, Ansari resisted. He punched the gunman and struck him on the neck with his elbow before pulling out a knife. At that moment, when Ansari attempted to stab the gunman, the DCP opened fire, injuring the accused in the shoulder and stomach.
While the gunfire subdued Ansari, the second accused managed to escape. Ansari was shifted to a corporate hospital in Nampally, where his condition is reported to be stable. A manhunt has been launched to trace his associate.
